    Book details

This is without doubt the most comprehensive field guide to the orchids of Britain and Europe. Every one of the 216 species and 30 subspecies are described and illustrated with superb colour photographs. For each species there is a close up photograph of the flower head and a more distant view showing the whole plant. There are also nearly 200 line drawings which highlight particular identification features. The text describes each species, as well as giving detailed information on habitat, flowering season, and distribution.

I first saw this and was comparing it to David Lang's first book Orchids Of Britain, I am I have to admit somewhat biased as David is a friendand knows how to keep fragile finds in orchids secret!I can share rare finds with him and he will not repeat them. His knowledge is legend, however this book for this price is key for every serious orchid hunter, Get it.In fact buy at any price!!It more than stands the test of time, it is scientifically spot on, and superbly illustrated and of course every species is well described!MRCHALK.

Brilliant book: all photographs and very detailed descritions packed into a book that will fit into a fairly large pocket or your backpack. Outstanding value.

A very good book that has helped me to identify many different orchids in my travels across europe but not what I call totally comprehensive because I in a short time have found several orchids omitted. These are, Anacamptis Coriophora, Anacamptis Morio, Anacamptis Laxaflora and Orchis angusticiuris. All from the region of Bulgaria near Veliko Tarnovo. So I imagine the authors should take a well deserved break and have a working holiday in Bulgaria so that the next edition is much more comprehensive.

very good informative book on orchids

The book covers a very large number of species, sub-species and variants, far more than earlier and less comprehensive guides. The photographs are numerous and very helpful for identification. The only minus point for me was that the current edition dates from 1991 and therefore there will most likely have been updates to nomenclature and distributions. Nevertheless, this is very useful field guide for anyone interested in orchids.

I found this book really useful. The only drawback is the index which is not particularly user friendly for an amateur . It means I sometimes have to leaf through the photos to find the type of orchid 'm looking at even if I have a good idea of it's type.

Detailed and thorough treatment of all European species. Lovely photos accompany well researched text. A lovely field guide for the advanced botanist.
