This is an excellent and exciting new book which I anticipate will become a leading and essential text in its field, informing and enriching therapeutic theory and practice of both students and advanced practitioners. The outstanding and beautifully executed text draws on a wealth of psychotherapy theory and presents it to us in a thoroughly accessible, sensitive and inspiring way. With her engaging writing style and great talent to synthesise and clarify theory, and articulate the nuances of practice, Linda Finlay skilfully leads us on an exploration of the "rich and varied terrain of relational integrative psychotherapy".I love the way Linda takes us into a vivid felt sense of client-therapist encounters...and shares her thinking with us about these relational encounters with great clarity and insight...very skilfully weaving in practice implications and theoretical perspectives from wide ranging and diverging modalities. Linda touchingly models for us 'embodying presence' and a 'relational way of being' and allows us to experience how she uses a relational focus and an integration of diverse techniques in her therapeutic encounters. The text is presented in two sections, the first concentrating on the process of therapy, with considerations of ten topics (e.g. 'empathising and attuning'; 'holding ,containing and boundarying' ; 'challenging'), the second examining six theoretical perspectives (e.g. gestalt; existential-phenomenological; transactional analysis). The lay-out is bright and appealing, and readability is greatly enhanced by numerous case studies, 'theory boxes', illustrative diagrams and extensive endnotes.Linda's passion and talent for integrating psychotherapy practice and theory shines out from each chapter and I feel that in producing 'Relational Integrative Psychotherapy' she offers our profession a great gift .With twenty five years experience as a UKCP Registered psychotherapist myself, I am delighted to add this book to my bookshelf. Whatever your modality, psychotherapeutic background and level of experience, I strongly feel that this innovative book will be a great resource. I most highly recommend it to you.

How I wish this book had been around when I had been training (as a psychotherapeutic counsellor). It is clear, helpful, thoughtful and thought-provoking. With every chapter there is a mixture of theory, case illustrations, boxed explanations and concluding reflections which helps the reader find her way, as well as helps her turn theory into practice. This is not a traditional 'how to' book, more a let's explore this from all sides and then you'll work out your own individual 'how to'. It can be read right through or dipped into. Essential reading for those working or training in the therapeutic services.
