    Book details

Psychodynamic Counselling in a Nutshell explains in clear, jargon-free style, the concepts at the heart of the psychodynamic approach, and, drawing on case material, describes the therapeutic practice which rests on those ideas. Assuming no previous knowledge of the subject, the book introduces the history of the approach, the key main concepts, and practical techniques used by practitioners. In the first chapter, the author introduces a client, John, whose case is revisited throughout the book, connecting together theory and practice for the reader. This new and revised edition also now includes new material on supervision, ethics, and Jung, and on outcome research and the most recent developments in the field.

'Well written and thoughtfully structured, this highly accessible, lively text offers the reader a contemporary andcomprehensive introduction to psychodynamic practice. Howard provides lucid explanations of core psychodynamic ideas and skills rooted in engaging clinical illustrations. It will be an invaluable companion both during and beyond training.' Professor Alessandra Lemma, Trust-wide Head of Psychology and Visiting ProfessorEssex University

Review Text

It's a great little book especially as an introduction if you are new to this counselling approach or a student in the early stages of your training. It's packed with information and great case study examples which help you learn the main theory concepts. Susan Howards writing style is easy understand and informative. I highly recommend this book.

When I first started studying psychodynamic ideas I found it extremely difficult to get an overall grasp of what it was all about. It was at this point that the book REALLY helped. It puts the ideas across in a way that makes sense but at the same time manages to capture a lot of the complexity in the ideas. If you are just starting out in psychodynamic counselling or would like an overview of how it works for some other reason I would highly recommend it.

This book is simple but doesn't treat the reader as an idiot. It outlines the main concepts and is full of good quotes for essays. A good introduction to the subject and to the author's other work.

fantastic and easy to read except the size of the print needed a magnifying glass to see it and also had to wear my glasses but very easy to understand and incorporate in to my learning

I love the content of the book well written and concise (as it says in a nutshell) but I HATE the tiny format, I like my books book size with a font I can read easily, I'm dyslexic but I think it would also be hard for many others. Such a shame as I can't dip into this book as easily as I'd like
